"WRITING NEXT" REPORT RELEASED 
A new report on writing -- Writing Next: Effective Strategies to Improve Writing 
of Adolescents in Middle and High School -- has been released. This report, 
commissioned by Carnegie Corporation of New York and published by the Alliance 
for Excellent Education, presents eleven specific teaching techniques that 
research suggests will help improve the writing abilities of students, grades 
4-12. Five of the six studies of the process writing approach were conducted by 
NWP site leaders. Writing Next also cites NWP's book Because Writing Matters. 
All of us may find the combination of the two publications, along with the reports of the National Commission on Writing, 
beneficial as we work with teachers and administrators. The parallels are
